This area, the Val di Chiana, of which Castiglione Fiorentino is one of the largest and most characteristic towns, was already inhabited in Etruscan times, and traces of their presence still remain. The Middle Ages and Renaissance later embellished this beautiful town. Still somewhat removed from the main tourist routes, it maintains a human-scale livability.
