Easter Processions
Easter in Tuscany is one of the most fascinating experiences to live, but in Castiglion Fiorentino the celebration reaches a truly unique atmosphere
This historic town, immersed in the natural and cultural beauty of the region, transforms during Holy Week, offering a deep immersion into religious traditions.
In the period leading up to Easter, Castiglion Fiorentino becomes the stage for religious processions that wind through the characteristic alleys of the historic center. Every year, particularly on Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, and Good Friday, members of the various Companies, wearing traditional hoods and holding lit torches, carry sacred statues and crosses around the town in an atmosphere of profound spirituality.
Holy Tuesday
The first of the processions is on Holy Tuesday, starting from the Church of San Francesco and organized by the Company of San Antonio, recognizable by their white robes. During this ceremony, the statue of "Jesus in the Garden of Olives" is carried, marking the beginning of the celebrations.
Holy Wednesday
Holy Wednesday sees the second procession, which also starts from the Church of San Francesco. Here, the confreres of the Bona Morte, dressed in black, carry the statue of "Jesus Bound to the Column," an image that adds an intense emotional touch to the procession.
Good Friday
The highlight of the celebrations takes place on Good Friday, when the Company of Gesù, dressed in blue, leads a solemn procession starting from the Church of the Collegiata. In this procession, the statue of the "Dead Christ" is carried, while the "Pious Women" accompany the "Sorrowful Madonna." The band plays along the route, adding a sacred and evocative dimension to the ceremony.
Holy Saturday
Another highly anticipated event is Holy Saturday, when the traditional "Volata" takes place at the Church of the Collegiata. At midnight, the church door opens, and the statue of the Risen Christ is run to the main altar amidst the sound of trumpets and the celebration of castagnole (traditional sweets), creating an extraordinary experience of faith and passion.
Participating in these traditions is an unmissable opportunity for anyone wishing to experience an authentic Easter, immersed in the heart of the Tuscan traditions of Castiglion Fiorentino, a place that preserves the spirituality and culture of the deepest Tuscany.
